Fairwell tribute to Mike and Hazel McGill

To All members of AFA,C

I am not sure how many of our members remember Mike and Hazel McGill, unfortunately I have to inform you of the sad news that Hazel, wife of one of our founder members, died on 25 December 2021, as far as I can ascertain was buried later that week on 30 December at Dhekelia Military Cemetery in the grave with her husband Mike.

Hazel was in the care for a number of years by the Nuns at the Terra Santa Convent in Larnaca.  She had received visits from our members and friends but over the past few years sadly she was unable to communicate or recognize visitors.

Mike McGill was - Scots Guards and served with the Guards Para Company.  He finished his service in Dhekelia Garrison, where he was one of the leading  lights at the Dhekelia Golf Club being honoured by having the 15th hole appropriately named ‘McGill Hill’.

Hazel has been described as a very bubbly character who supported and busied herself around the Golf Club for many years.  That portrayal  certainly confirms my memories of Hazel smiling, helpful and always busy.  Mike and Hazel were married for 45 very happy years.

My thoughts are that we as members of the Airborne Club should meet up in Dhekelia at some time soon to give Hazel and Mike an ‘Airborne’ send off, followed by a lunch at Lambros, fish & chips.

With best regards

Mike

Farewell tribute to Eric Manuel

Not, How Did He Die, But How Did He Live?

Not, how did he die, but how did he live?

Not what did he gain, but what did he give?

These are the units to measure the worth

of a man as a man, regardless of his birth.

Nor what was his church, nor what was his creed?

But had he befriended those really in need?

Was he ever ready, with words of good cheer

to bring back a smile, or banish a tear?

Not what did the sketch in the newspaper say,

But how many were sorry when he passed away?
